Two security men martyred as terror attack on Jamrud checkpost thwarted
Two security personnel, including a police officer and Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel, were martyred when unidentified attackers opened fire on a joint checkpost in the Khyber district's Jamrud area, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.
According to police sources, the attack took place at the Takhta Baig joint checkpost in Jamrud, where the attackers used both heavy and light weapons.
Security personnel fought back bravely and foiled the attack. During the exchange of fire, police officer Shamal Shalmani and FC personnel Nazir were martyred.
Additional police personnel immediately reached the checkpost following the attack and started a search operation under the supervision of District Police Officer (DPO) Waqar Ahmad.
DPO WaqarAhmad said the martyred personnel had shown exceptional courage while performing their duties. He said Khyber Police remained firmly committed to fighting terrorism.
The Khyber DPO vowed that terrorists would not be allowed to achieve their “nefarious aims”.
The latest attack comes a month after two police personnel were injured in an explosion near the vehicle of the officer in charge of a checkpost in the mountainous area of Khyber district.
On July 23, the two injured officers, including checkpost in-charge Khushhal Ameen, were taken to hospital. Police said their condition was stable. A heavy police contingent later reached the area and launched a search operation.
On the same day, two people were also injured when unidentified attackers hurled a hand grenade at a petrol station in the Bara area of Khyber district. Several vehicles were damaged in the attack, while the injured were shifted to a hospital in Peshawar.
