Tea prices shoot up

February 25, 2023 03:24 AM

Tea leaves crisis is looming in the market following the non-clearance of containers at the port, and a number of tea companies has increased the prices, reported 24NewsHD V channel on Friday.

According to shopkeepers, the price of 1kg tea packet has been increased by Rs300 to Rs350 during a week.

The price of the loose tea has risen from Rs1,200 to Rs1,600 per kg, while branded tea leaves are being sold at Rs1,800 up from Rs1,750.

Shopkeepers lamented that soaring prices have trimmed the purchasing power of the people, and tea importer companies are facing difficulties in getting cleared their containers.

They warned that if this situation persists, the tea prices would likely to go up to Rs2,500.

Even a cup of tea that cost the impoverished Rs30 now costs them Rs50.
