Six newly-elected senators take oath

Six new members of the Senate of Pakistan took oath of their office on Thursday, 24NewsHD TV reported.  

At the session presided over by Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, Senator Talha Mahmood, Senator Niaz Ahmad and Senator Robina Khalid took the oath of their office.

Senator Faisal Javed, Senator Pir Noorul Haq Qadri and Senator Mirza Afridi also took the oath of office their office.

The last three senators belong to the embattled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.

On Monday, the seat-adjustment agreement between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government and the opposition played out during Senate elections in the province, with unofficial results showing the treasury securing six seats and the opposition winning five.

Under the agreed seat-sharing formula, the treasury—backed by 92 members in the KP Assembly—was allotted six seats, while the opposition, with 53 members, was given five.

What initially appeared to be a three-way contest—between PTI, PTI dissidents, and opposition lawmakers—ultimately became a two-way race after the “disgruntled” PTI faction was reduced to just one active candidate.

According to unofficial results, PTI’s Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Mirza Afridi and Noorul Haq Qadri were elected to Senate seats on general tickets.
