Imran Khan announces long march on Friday

Says march will start from Liberty Chowk of Lahore at 11:00am; Marchers will enter Red Zone in Islamabad

October 25, 2022 09:31 PM

Former prime minister Imran Khan has announced that he will kickstart a long march to the federal capital Islamabad on Friday, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday.

The long march will start from Liberty Chowk of Lahore at 11:00 am and head towards Islamabad from GT Road, he said while addressing a press conference in the Punjab capital. He added there is no timeframe for the conclusion of the long march.

He continued: “I am claiming now that it will be the largest-ever march of history,” he said, adding that this would have nothing to do with politics as the PTI has been fighting for the future of the country.

“It is beyond politics as we are fighting for real independence. We have to decide now whether we have to get rid of these thieves or be their slaves. I want to appeal to the nation to choose a path in this decisive time. We will enter Red Zone in Islamabad and we will follow the law.

“This would be a peaceful march, the PTI marchers will not take the law into their hands. No hurdles were created when the two marches were taken out during the PTI rule in the Centre.”

The former prime minister came down hard on the coalition government, saying: “The thieves were imposed on us and their handlers are mistreating the nationals. They think that the nation will stay silent.”

He said that PTI marchers had been brutally tortured for holding a peaceful protest on May 25.

Imran Khan again alleged the ruling coalition has been busy with endeavours to stop his ‘real freedom movement’ and registering fake cases against his party members and gaging the media.

Last Friday, the Election Commission of Pakistan gave its verdict in the Toshakhana reference, declaring Imran Khan disqualified. The ECP bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja announced the decision made last month, ruling Imran Khan committed dishonesty and the commission has ordered criminal proceedings against him under Article 63(1)(P).

Imran submitted a false declaration to the Election Commission and lied in his annual returns, the verdict stated, adding that some of the gifts retained from Toshakhana were concealed in his assets.  The PTI supporters took to the streets against the ECP and Imran Khan announced he would give the long march next week. Imran Khan won six of eight national assembly seats he stood for in a weekend by-election, a vote he called a referendum on his popularity.

The 70-year-old has been in action to disrupt Pakistan's political process since his April ouster when he ordered all his lawmakers to give up their seats, leaving no PTI members in the National Assembly. He rode to power in 2018 on a populist platform promising social reforms, and a fight against corruption. But, under his tenure, the economy stagnated and he lost the support of the establishment.

The federal government has braced for the long march. It sought additional police from the provinces and the deployment of FC and Rangers to fend off the marchers.
