LHC acquits father, son in assistant commissioner’s murder case

The Lahore High Court has acquitted a man and his son previously convicted in the murder case of Assistant Commissioner Jhang Imran Jafar, setting aside the Sessions Court’s verdict against them, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. 

A division bench comprising Justice Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry and Justice Sardar Akbar Ali Dogar on Friday announced the verdict, acquitting Asghar Ali and his son Sohail Asghar five years after the case was initiated. 

The Sessions Court in Chiniot had sentenced Sohail Asghar to death and his father, Asghar Ali, to life imprisonment for the murder of Imran Jafar. 

According to the case record, the accused had shot and killed Imran Jafar on December 5, 2021. At the time, Jafar was serving as Assistant Commissioner Jhang and was visiting his home while on leave. 

The father and son, who were close relatives of the deceased, were involved in a dispute over water drainage, as per the case details. 

The High Court set aside the trial court’s convictions after finding no evidence establishing the presence of the eyewitnesses at the crime scene.

The court also cited contradictions between the statements of the witnesses and the medical report as grounds for acquitting the accused.
