Russia’s state media has reported that the United States and Iran have agreed on a new ceasefire, with the proposed deal said to include free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the reports, a formal announcement of the ceasefire is expected within the next few days. Negotiations and technical meetings would then take place as part of efforts to support the agreement.
Meanwhile, US news website Axios reported that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had told allies that Washington was moving from military action against Iran towards sanctions.
Rubio reportedly said the United States was now focusing on other ways to put pressure on Iran. These measures include sanctions that have been imposed recently.
He also confirmed that the United States does not currently expect to carry out further attacks on Iran.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, however, said Washington would need to correct its mistakes and honour its commitments if it wanted the Strait of Hormuz to reopen.
The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister warned that Iran would take action against US interests if new sanctions against Tehran were enforced.
The reported developments come as efforts continue to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a key issue in discussions over regional security and navigation.
