Closure of Pakistan Post saving accounts irks millions

January 28, 2021 03:53 PM

The closure of saving accounts of Pakistan Post in Rawalpindi has put millions of account holders as well as Pakistan Post management in a quandary, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.

According to a copy of the letter written by chief post master, Rawalpindi to post master general, Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders, the former has conveyed to the latter not only people’s lack of trust in the system but has also requested them to review the arrangements in view of the closure of the saving accounts.

He has informed them that Pakistan Post Office is facing difficulties in transferring the accounts to national savings.

He has also told them that Pakistan Post staff is working 12 hours a day, and that more resources are being used.

Other officials have also admitted lack of facilities due to which people have to visit Pakistan Post offices time and again for getting information.

They say people, living in far flung areas where branches already exist, are not in favour of transferring their accounts to national savings. They wanted their accounts to be closed instead, the officials added.

Chief post master has suggested allocating a separate budget for the transfer of accounts.

He has also proposed to the stakeholders to facilitate those not having bank accounts to draw amounts up to Rs2 lakhs.

Similarly, he has proposed that accounts of more than Rs5 lakhs be transferred to the national savings.

The chief post master has told the stakeholders that over 0.1 million account holders have been affected due to the government’s policy.
