Primary schools to reopen today

The government on Tuesday announced to reopen all the primary schools throughout the country from Wednesday (today), reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood said all the provinces are on board in this regard. “The primary classes will start on Wednesday with standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he added.

Special Assistant for Health Dr Faisal Sultan was also present at the media briefing given by the education minister.

The TV channel reported the decision was taken in the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) meeting presided over by Federal Planning Minister Asad Umar on Tuesday morning. The meeting was attended by Special Assistant for Health Dr Faisal Sultan, Interior Advisor Shehzad Akbar, federal ministers Hammad Azhar, Noorul Haq Qadri, Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Noshin Hamid, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood and Interior Minister Brigadier (retd) Ijaz Shah.

At the news briefing, Shafqat Mehmood said, “Primary education centres will be opened across the country and all those schools that will not comply with SOPs will be shut down.”

He clarified that the decision has been taken only on the data available with the NCOC and there is no other reason to take this decision. He said 171,436 tests were conducted since the reopening of the higher schools.

Shafqat Mehmood said many schools were closed only after they were found violating the corona-related SOPs.

The minister praised the educators, school administrations and staff from across the country for putting their collective efforts to stem the COVID-19 following the SOPs.
