YouTube introduces new subscription plan Premium Lite
YouTube has introduced a new subscription plan called Premium Lite, which offers a more affordable option than YouTube Premium, though with fewer features. To clarify the differences, YouTube provided the image below for reference.
With YouTube Premium, subscribers enjoy an entirely ad-free experience (except for the sponsored segments that seem to appear in nearly every video), along with the ability to download videos and enjoy background playback. Premium Lite, however, does not include these perks.
While Premium Lite doesn’t offer video downloads or background playback, you’ll still experience "most videos ad-free" across categories like gaming, fashion, beauty, and news. However, ads may still appear on music content, Shorts, and during searches or browsing.
Priced at $7.99 per month, Premium Lite is significantly cheaper than Premium, which costs $13.99. That’s a savings of $6 per month, or $72 annually. Whether that’s worth it depends on your personal preferences.
Currently, Premium Lite is being offered as a pilot in the U.S., and in the coming weeks, it will expand to all users in Germany, Thailand, and Australia, where it’s been available in limited testing. YouTube plans to roll out Premium Lite to additional countries later this year.
YouTube reports that Premium now has over 125 million subscribers globally, though this figure includes those using trial versions. Premium Lite seems aimed at attracting users who don’t need YouTube Music or the ability to download content, offering a more budget-friendly way to experience fewer ads.
