Mouni Roy breaks silence on being typecast
Bollywood actress Mouni Roy, who rose to fame with her captivating performances in hit television dramas and blockbuster films, has finally addressed the long-standing perception of her being typecast.
The actress, currently seen in JioHotstar’s upcoming espionage thriller Salakaar, opened up about the stereotypes she has faced throughout her career.
Mouni, who first appeared on Indian television as Krishna Tulsi in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, recalled how people initially dismissed her as “the girl next door” who could not pull off glamorous roles.
Speaking to Showsha, she revealed that after her stint in reality and dance shows, she was labelled “too glamorous,” and when she played Sati in Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev, she was told she was “too Indian.”
The actress gained massive popularity with Ekta Kapoor’s supernatural hit Naagin, but with that came another label.
“After Naagin, people said I could only do fantasy fiction or mythological shows,” Mouni said. She admitted that such comments no longer bother her. “It doesn’t matter whether you call me glamorous, stylish, or anything else, like saying she’s good for a certain kind of role,” she added.
Mouni noted that even when she impressed audiences with her fierce portrayal of Junoon in Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s Brahmāstra, some said she was best suited for “outlandish roles” rather than larger-than-life characters. Her takeaway from every project, however, is the audience’s reaction. “If it resonates with them and they receive it well, that’s all that matters,” she said.
The actress describes herself as “hungry and greedy” for challenging roles, greedy in the right sense. She wants to be part of great scripts, strong storytelling, and work with like-minded creatives. “I want to do roles I’ve never done before,” she stated.
