A sessions court in Lahore Saturday gave the last warning to singer Meesha Shafi to produce her witnesses, Leena Ghani and Farhan Ali, for the cross-examination.
Additional District & Sessions Judge Azhar Iqbal Ranjha directed Ms Shafi to produce both the witnesses on April 03, stating that “no further adjournment may be granted at any cost in this regard.”
The court was hearing a Rs100 million defamation suit by singer-actor Ali Zafar against Ms Shafi.
On the last date of the hearing, the judge had summoned make-up artist Leena Ghani and Meesha’s manager Farhan Ali on March 20, but both the witnesses didn’t appear in court on Saturday.
Advocate Saqib Jillani, the counsel for Meesha Shafi, submitted an application seeking adjournment with the contentions that Meesha’s manager is working for ISPR for the event of 23rd March and has not been allowed by ISPR to leave the premises
“Whereas, Leena Ghani, who organized Aurat March, has received threats from the various extremist organizations,” Saqib Jillani said.
Ms Shafi’s mother and witness Saba Hameed was present in the court.
Ali Zafar’s lawyer Umer Gill opposed the adjournment, saying that every time a new excuse is presented; Meesha is trying to delay the court proceedings.
The court observed that it was mutually agreed between the learned counsels that Meesha Shafi would produce Ms Ghani and Mr Frahan Ali on March 20 but both the witnesses were not present for their cross-examination
The judge granted a one-time adjournment with a clear warning to Ms Shafi to produce both the witnesses on the next date of hearing i.e. April 03, 2021.
Ali Zafar’s lawyer Barrister Ambreen Qureshi said Meesha tactics have been exposed which were to accuse Ali Zafar on social media, file frivolous cases, have it covered by their supporting media outlets, damage AZ and then run away.
