PM Shahbaz Sharif rejects proposal to raise fuel prices amid global energy crisis

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has extended Eid-ul -Fitr greetings to the nation on Friday and announced that petrol and diesel prices would remain unchanged, rejecting a proposal to increase rates amid a historic surge in global oil prices.

Speaking to the nation, Shahbaz Sharif said global crude oil prices had soared to $158 per barrel, up from $72 per barrel just three weeks ago, a rise that has placed a direct burden on households worldwide.

“The rapid increase in oil prices has triggered a new wave of inflation, severely affecting the daily lives of ordinary people,” he said.

The prime minister recalled that in early March, fuel price hikes of 55 rupees per litre had already been implemented, which had heavily impacted household expenses and created challenges for many families.

“I am fully aware of the hardships faced by the public, and I sincerely thank you for your patience and resilience,” he added.

Shahbaz Sharif said he had been presented with proposals to raise petrol by 50 rupees per litre and diesel by 74 rupees per litre, but he rejected the recommendations, citing the strain such increases would place on ordinary citizens.

He urged citizens to embrace fraternity, solidarity and mutual support during challenging times, stressing that regional conflicts have not only destabilized the global economy but also disrupted everyday life in Pakistan and neighbouring countries.
