Washing fruits and vegetables before refrigerating? Here’s what to know

Many people wash fresh fruits and vegetables as soon as they bring them home and then put them in the refrigerator. While this may seem like a good way to keep produce clean and ready to use, storing fruits and vegetables while they are still wet can actually make them spoil faster.

If fruits and vegetables are not going to be used immediately, it is generally better to store them dry and wash them just before eating or cooking. Moisture left on their surfaces can remain inside the refrigerator and encourage mould growth and rotting in some types of produce.

For this reason, wash only the amount you need shortly before use.

How to store cut fruits and vegetables

Cut fruits and vegetables should not be left uncovered in the refrigerator. Instead, keep them in a clean, covered container to protect them and help maintain their freshness.

It is also important to check stored produce regularly. If any fruit or vegetable begins to rot or spoil, remove it immediately to prevent the problem from affecting other items.

Not every vegetable belongs in the refrigerator

Not all produce needs to be refrigerated. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and dry onions, for example, generally keep better in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.

A few simple storage habits can help fruits and vegetables stay fresh for longer while also reducing unnecessary food waste.

Wash produce before eating

Whether fruits and vegetables have been stored in the refrigerator or outside, they should be washed thoroughly under clean running water before eating or cooking.

Fruits and vegetables such as apples and cucumbers, which are often eaten with their skins, can be gently rubbed under running water to remove dirt and other residues.

However, soap, detergents, or household cleaning chemicals should never be used to wash fruits and vegetables.
