Sharmeen Chinoy calls on CM Maryam, discusses Punjab Film City project

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif met with Oscar-winning filmmaker and journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to discuss the future of film, culture, and media development in the province.

Welcoming the globally acclaimed filmmaker, Maryam Nawaz praised Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s outstanding professional achievements and her powerful use of documentary storytelling to highlight social issues.

She described her work as impactful and inspiring, noting how it has brought international attention to important human and societal concerns.

During the meeting, both sides held detailed discussions on the proposed Punjab Film City project, planned within the Nawaz Sharif IT City (NSIT City). The chief minister shared her vision of creating Pakistan’s first fully integrated “end-to-end” media production hub.
The project is expected to offer comprehensive facilities, including film and television production, digital media, visual effects, and post-production services.

Maryam Nawaz further revealed that the film city will feature modern studios, sound stages, post-production labs, dedicated shooting locations, and even a lake to enhance visual production possibilities.

The plan also includes the development of a convention hall, a media trade hub, and specialized schools for film and music, aimed at nurturing new talent and strengthening the country’s creative ecosystem.

In addition to film development, the chief minister directed the Parks and Horticulture Authority to restore and upgrade key cultural landmarks such as Minar-e-Pakistan and the Digital History Museum, reflecting a broader commitment to preserving and promoting heritage.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, in turn, praised Maryam Nawaz’s leadership and ongoing initiatives, calling her efforts commendable.

She highlighted the revival of cultural events such as the Basant festival, noting that such initiatives not only provide quality entertainment but also help reconnect people with cultural traditions.

She further shared that international interest is already growing, with prominent figures from Hollywood expressing curiosity about participating in future editions of the festival.

The filmmaker also appreciated the revival of traditional events like the Horse and Cattle Show, emphasizing their importance in offering meaningful public engagement and cultural expression.
