Orangi Town woman’s murder case emerges as honor killing

The murder of a woman in Orangi Town, Karachi, has been declared an honor killing, with her husband alleging that she was killed by her relatives shortly after being taken to her uncle’s house, 24NewsHD TV reported. 

A murder case was registered at Mominabad Police Station following the killing of Zarqa Bibi. According to her husband, Abdul Malik, the couple had entered into a court marriage on September 9. He stated that after the marriage, Zarqa was taken to her uncle Idrees’ house after he swore an oath on the Quran. 

Abdul Malik said Idrees had assured the couple that Zarqa would be sent back to her husband’s home after the wedding festivities were concluded. However, the husband alleged that Zarqa was murdered on the very night she was taken to her uncle’s house and that her body was disposed of immediately. 

Zarqa’s brother Sarfaraz, maternal uncle Jameel, and paternal uncle Idrees have been implicated in the murder case.
Moreover, Abdul Malik stated that he and his family have been receiving threats following Zarqa’s killing and demanded that the authorities provide justice and take strict action against those responsible.    

The case has raised serious concerns over the continued occurrence of honor killings, in which women are subjected to violence or killed by relatives over family or social notions of “honor.” Such cases underscore the grave consequences of denying women the right to make decisions about their own marriages and lives, and highlight the need for effective protection and accountability.
