Section 144 in force in Islamabad, gatherings of five or more banned

The Islamabad district administration has reminded residents that Section 144 remains in force across the federal capital, prohibiting gatherings, processions, rallies and demonstrations at public places.

According to an order issued by the Office of the District Magistrate, gatherings of five or more people have been prohibited within the revenue limits of Islamabad, including the Red Zone, in view of the prevailing law and order and security situation.

The order, issued on Sept. 18, came into effect immediately and will remain in force for two months.

The administration said strict legal action would be taken against those violating the restrictions and urged citizens not to participate in unlawful gatherings or other activities that could disturb public order.

Public assemblies in Islamabad are also regulated under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024. The law applies to the Islamabad Capital Territory and defines an assembly as a public, religious or political gathering, rally or sit-in involving more than 15 people at a public place. Under Section 8 of the law, a person who is a member of an unlawful assembly may face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine, or both. (Pakistan Code)

The Section 144 order currently in force is more restrictive, prohibiting gatherings of five or more people, along with processions, rallies and demonstrations at public places.

The district administration urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and security agencies and demonstrate responsible citizenship while the restrictions remain in place.
