It’s a shame! Ahmed Ali Butt questions lack of major tribute for Noor Jehan
Pakistani actor, comedian and host Ahmed Ali Butt has expressed disappointment over the lack of major institutional recognition for his grandmother, legendary singer and actress Madam Noor Jehan, on what would have been her 100th birthday.
Taking to his Instagram Stories, Ahmed shared a black and white portrait of Noor Jehan along with an emotional and strongly worded note, questioning why the centenary of one of Pakistan’s most celebrated cultural figures did not receive the kind of large scale tribute he expected.
“No tribute, no PTV special transmission, no special show on any network, not even a poster at Liberty to wish you a 100th birthday,” Ahmed wrote.
He suggested that Noor Jehan’s music remains the strongest reminder of her contribution, adding that without her songs continuing to be heard, the state might have forgotten her.
“If it weren't for your songs that people still listen to, the state would have forgotten you yesterday,” he stated.
Ahmed then broadened his criticism to the way Pakistan preserves the work and legacy of its artists, raising concerns about documentation, copyright protection and the safeguarding of creative material.
“This is how we have always honoured our legends... by making sure not to document their work, illegally hijack their work and copyright, by making sure the artist and their legacy are never protected,” he wrote.
The actor lamented what he described as a failure to preserve Pakistan’s artistic history and cultural identity.
“It’s a shame how we have forgotten our own identity and culture and the people who contributed their lives to it,” Ahmed added.
Drawing a comparison with other countries, he argued that artists in many parts of the world are commemorated through biographies, academic study and cultural projects.
“Other countries preserve and make biopics on their artists, teach their work at universities and celebrate their achievements,” he wrote, adding that he found it “sad and heartbreaking” to see Pakistan losing touch with its own cultural identity.
Ahmed ended the emotional tribute with a personal message for his grandmother: “Happy birthday Nano.”
The Instagram Story also featured Noor Jehan’s classic Punjabi song “Sano Nehar Wale Pul Te Bula Ke,” adding a musical tribute to the centenary remembrance.
It is worthy to mention that Ahmed Ali Butt is Noor Jehan’s maternal grandson and the son of her daughter, singer Zil-e-Huma, making his affectionate reference to her as “Nano” a personal family tribute.
Ahmed’s remarks have now reignited discussion around how Pakistan documents, protects and celebrates its legendary artists, particularly at significant milestones such as Noor Jehan’s 100th birth anniversary.
