Senate seeks report on Saba Mahboob killing

Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights has taken notice of the murder of 21-year-old Christian woman Saba Mehboob in Rawalpindi, reported 24NewsHD TV Channel.

Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights Samina Mumtaz Zehri sought a detailed report on the case from the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police.

The committee directed that the report include all facts of the case, the status of the investigation, and the investigating officer's findings.

The chairperson also directed the authorities to ensure transparent and speedy justice for the affected family.

The Punjab IG was asked to submit the report to the Senate Secretariat as soon as possible.

A formal notice from the Senate Standing Committee has been dispatched to the Punjab IG and the City Police Officer.

Saba Mehboob was shot dead in the Dhok Ratta area on September 3. Police registered a case at Ratta Amral Police Station.

According to the FIR, Saba Mehboob was at her home when her neighbour Adnan Butt allegedly entered the house with a pistol. He accused Saba of infidelity before shooting her in the forehead, killing her on the spot.

Saba’s family gave a different account, saying Adnan Butt had been harassing her and making unwanted advances.

They believe her refusal may have contributed to the attack. 

The FIR further states that after the shooting, the suspect and another man took Saba’s teenage stepbrother and held him for around 21 hours.

He was threatened with death and pressured to accept responsibility for his sister’s killing.

Police later arrested Adnan, while his accomplice Waheed was also arrested on September 23 in connection with the murder and alleged abduction.

Adnan Butt’s family has rejected the allegations and claimed that Saba’s brother was responsible for the fatal shooting.
