Chashma-1 sets 427-day record for safe and uninterrupted operation
Nuclear plant achieved score of 100 in WANO index for two consecutive quarters: Its electricity generation cost stands at Rs6.876 per unit
The Chashma-1 nuclear power plant has achieved a record 427 days of safe and uninterrupted continuous operation, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Thursday.
According to an official statement, the achievement had placed Chashma-1 among the world's leading nuclear plants in terms of reliable operation and safety.
Following the performance, Chashma-1 achieved a score of 100 in the World Association of Nuclear Operators index for two consecutive quarters, the statement said.
Electricity generated by the Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station costs Rs6.876 per unit. The official statement said electricity from the station had the second-lowest generation cost after hydropower.
The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) operates six nuclear power plants with a combined generation capacity of 3,530 megawatts.
The statement said the 427-day record reflected the technical expertise and teamwork of engineers, scientists and other staff working at Chashma-1.
It added that the achievement further highlighted the role of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in strengthening the country's energy security.
